For many people the prospect of talking about personal problems with a psychologist can seem daunting. This is particularly so if you have never consulted a mental health professional before.
Personal growth and change, however, happen when we step outside our comfort zone. In fact, achieving our personal goals often requires getting uncomfortable. When consulting a psychologist for the first time, that feeling of discomfort may be fear of the unknown, a fear of change, or an unspecified feeling of general anxiety. This experience of anxiety will be stronger for people who have been struggling with anxiety for quite some time. The temptation may be to avoid stepping outside your comfort zone. However, the chances are that what you are currently doing to solve your problems is either not working, or it’s helping to some extent but your life is still restricted or limited by the issues that you are struggling with.
